Introduction
When I began writing this book, 2020 was drawing to a close. It not only brought the devastation of COVID-19, but it also widened the gaps between numerous groups of people.
More than ever, the struggles of millions of marginalized individuals have been brought to light, revealing truths that many Americans
cannot even begin to comprehend. I’m talking about people who struggle because they have, as Parker Palmer says, “otherness.”
Perhaps they are people of color or members of the LGBTQ+ community. Or both.
Maybe they have a physical, mental, or emotional disability. Perhaps they practice a religion other than Christianity.
More people need to read their stories and understand their challenges.

Objective
My objective years ago, was to speak with and learn from those who have experienced discrimination, and share their stories and impart their truths, knowing I would probably screw up along the way. Why?
Because, as I told my dear friend and client Bryan Fonseca when I first began toying with the idea of collecting these stories, I’m just a
clueless white woman. Okay, I was not 100 percent clueless.
But when it came to issues of inequity between different races, gender identities, sexual preferences, abilities, religions, and other aspects that divide our country, I felt, deep inside, like I was way behind the times, that I had so much to learn. I still do have a lot to learn, and I’m sure many people are in the same boat.
